Trillium Academy serves twice-exceptional (2e) students in grades 5–12 — intellectually gifted individuals whose strengths and challenges coexist in complex, highly individual ways. Their developmental paths are asynchronous or nonlinear, and in conventional school settings, their gifts are often hidden by their struggles.
2e students can be dynamic, analytical, and imaginative. They are full of original ideas and organic connections between concepts. But that same mental agility can bring overwhelm, difficulty initiating tasks, and trouble sustaining focus. Many of our students have spent years exhausted, demotivated, and masking who they really are just to get through the day.
Who We Serve
Nearly all our students have more than one diagnosis, creating overlapping and sometimes competing needs. Most of their challenges involve executive functioning, emotional regulation, and managing cognitive load. Below is a breakdown of our student profiles.

*AuDHD is not a separate diagnosis but it acknowledges the unique challenges and strengths for students with this dual diagnosis.
**Writing is the single greatest academic challenge for most students. Dysgraphia affects not just handwriting but the organization of thoughts and ideas – placing simultaneous demands on executive function, motor coordination, and emotional regulation.
What They Need
Our students need both structure and flexibility, predictable routines alongside responsive accommodations. They need support with attention, task initiation, planning, sensory regulation, and emotional safety as the foundation for learning. Our small student-to-teacher ratio and deeply experienced 2e educators allow us to design our program around student needs rather than asking students to conform to our structure. What Becomes Possible
When given the right support, our students turn their ideas into remarkable realities. Students passionate about music are building a pipe organ from scratch — constructing pipes in our MakerSpace and coding the technology to make it play. Others are writing novels, building nuclear decay simulators, and designing entire worlds complete with hand-drawn maps and invented languages. Our staffulty support each student's passions by providing the executive function scaffolding needed to see ambitious projects through to completion.
“I don’t feel like my learning disabilities are a burden at Trillium, and I can honestly get the help I need to be successful without struggling for it. Being surrounded by all neurodivergent peers makes me so much more comfortable and supported. I’m not ashamed about being neurodivergent here, I’m not worried about fitting in, or having to pretend to fit in. It has changed everything for me.” – Trillium High School Student
